An exploration of the idea of beauty and hierarchy. The images used represent what society views as beauty and the text contrasts. This is an exploration of beauty and what society thinks is beautiful. It looks at sculpture , art and royalty. Just because something is important does not mean that it is beautiful, there are many sides and stories to people and places. Sometimes you need to look deeper.

What is Beauty?

As a graphic design student I have heard the name â€œSaul Bassâ€ in just about every class that I have taken, mostly in my motion design class. Before digging into Saul Bass and researching I never realized how he has influenced me as a designer without even knowing. What I find really interesting and inspiring about Mr. Bass is the universal talent he had. He was amazing at almost everything he did, with work in corporate identity, films, title sequences and ad campaigns. To pay tribute to Saul I was inspired by children's books and designed it to have pull tabs, flipbooks, cutouts. I wanted the book to represent the playfulness that Bass brought into all of his work regardless of the genre or subject matter.

A Book for Saul

This project involved the design of a colophon, choosing the typefaces, redoing the diagrams in illustrator, designing the table of contents, chapter and section openings, choosing the pull quotes, creating the charts, and designing the glossary. Almost every page was touched in the making of the book. The book itself was 370 pages.

Unidentified

Fame is not all sunshine and rainbows as we all are lead to believe. Judy Garland is a good example of someone who experienced the darker side of Hollywood. As a child star Judy was manipulated and used. Her life was a true example of how people can appear to be happy, and put up a front, but in reality they are miserable. It is easy for us to fake feeling and â€œput a smile onâ€ or a â€œmaskâ€ to hide out true emotion. Each of these cards has a main figure in black and white representing the main idea with a paper doll outline on which represents how people were able to decide what they wanted to see when they saw Judy. Along with the imagery there is aÂ quote that helps communicate the idea. The look of these cards are also inspired by paperdolls which children play with and can reareange and make there doll to be anything they want, much like what the public and media did to Judy.

Twelve for Judy

This is a project that showcases different words (Zany, Cheerful, and Dizzy) and fundemental shapes to create a narrative in 35 seconds. I started out with choosing the music that I wanted for my peice and went on from there. I also wanted to choose a color pallete that I havenâ€™t used before and that is somewhat out of my comfort zone. The narrative that I wanted to create was one of eye movement.Â
